Today is a cold and sunny November day. The light is beautifully bright; the days start to be short while the nights are long and dark. The coloured leaves let go, they gracefully float down, finding their place on earth embedded on other leaves; bright leaves on top of brown leaves. The veil between dark and light, between life and death seems to be thin. It is the time when we start to spend more time inside, when our bodies need time to rest, to sleep and to dream, to let new seeds grow silently deep within us.
Inspiriting, teaching and connecting
In October I went to the European Dance Movement Therapy Conference ‘Crossing Boarders” in Athens together with my colleague Simone Kleinloh. We presented a workshop about choreographic approaches in a therapeutic setting to more than forty dance therapists. It was nice to share our work, get inspired by other colleagues and to spend time with each other. Athens was the perfect setting to enjoy being with each other and to feel the necessity to do our work, offering people support by finding body and mind connectivity in times of crises. It saddened me to see poverty in the city, refugees sleeping close to churches in the streets while tourism and cosmopolitan life style happens just a few meters apart. I am questioning how these unequal prepositions we live in will influence our future. The Greek dance therapists deal with these problems day by day and many of them spoke about it during the Conference, as it was the theme of the conference.
I also went to the European Laban Bartenieff Conference in Remscheid where I attended interesting applications of the Laban/Bartenieff work. It is good to see that the Laban/Bartenieff Movement System is developing and growing. It is such a rich and inspiring body of work and has many applications. I believe we do need to remember people in this area of technology that we need to include our bodies more. Technology is not a bad thing but we need to learn how to use it without loosing our humanity. Being human means to have and be a body. Our bodies connect us to all living matter and are reminding us that there is really no separation between our environment and us.
Upcoming plans: education, workshops and summer dance retreat
I am very happy to introduce you to the Embodied Movement Institute (EMOVE Institute) that I co-founded together with Marieke Delannoy. We will start a certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement System Education in Rotterdam in July 2019. Please check out our website:
If you are interested in Laban/Bartenieff work you can attend an introductory workshop I will give in June in Remscheid (Germany) check out the link here:
Introductory workshop in Remscheid from 1-7 June 2019
I will offer three Friday afternoon workshops in Amsterdam as part of my practice. In these BODY series I like to share themes that interest me in an explorative way. You can inscribe yourself for one or for all three of them. Places will be limited to 8, so do not wait to long if you are interested.
As each year I will offer a Summer Dance Retreat in Southern Spain. It is an amazing place in the middle of mountains close to the Mediterranean seaside and Granada. Once there, people usually do not want to leave any more. We are dancing outside on an open-air wooden dance floor surrounded by beautiful chestnut trees and waterfalls. Please check out the flyer for all the information. The early bird will end at the end of February.
I am wishing you a good winter time with lots of warm teas, cosy evenings and of course happy dancing!
